Burgerfest
250,000 people a day - the whole weekend long. Its not Oktoberfest - its the one, the only, the bi-annual Burgerfest! Huzzah! This summer fest hosted by city, Regensburg, translates to "People's Festival". Why do we have a huge party for the people that closes down the whole downtown for 3 days, lands loud bands on every corner, clogs all the streets and plazas with thousands of food and goods booths, trashes the whole city, and gets everyone drunk before its even dark? Well, why not?
I've got some pictures up HERE, but they hardly do it justice - probably because I spent most of the time with either some sort of crazy Hungarian or Thai food in hand, or a Mass full of fresh Bavarian beer. This meant photos were few and far between.
The highlight of the festival was a great fireworks show set off right above our most renowned symbol, the Stony Bridge. Hanging from a tree along the banks of the Donau on a clear night after a long day of celebrating - surrounded by thousands of cheerful Germans watching boats drift across the smooth river, illuminated by vibrant explosions coordinated to Carmina Burana is one of those moments irreversibly burned in my memory. In a year from now I'm going to turn to my friend Kevin and wonder "Dude, remember that Burgerfest? Whatever happened to those days?"
