Maitag, Mayday!
Ahhh... the first of May. Spring is here to stay!In America we all know that the first of May is May Day, but that's about it. Turns out that in Germany its actually a holiday, with all the bells and whistles of tradition attached. May Day, or Maitag, is the day Germans celebrate spring and the return of life after winter. In a practical sense, this means everyone in Bavaria pulls out the Lederhosen and Durndles, hoists up a massive May Pole, and spends the day drinking outside with friends while listening to traditional horn bands (think of the most stereotypical Bavarian music, and there you are).
My particular student apartment complex happens to be an avid May Day participant. So I borrowed some Lederhosen, grabbed my digital, and headed downstairs to enjoy a few of the 1000L of Freibier, free beer, the landlords were giving out as thanks to the tenants for a good year. Sitting outside with good friends and free German beer on a gorgeous day is about as good as it gets. I somehow managed to snap a few shots of the proceedings, which you can find HERE.
Prost!
